THE BENEFITS OF FASTING

Note:  Jesus instructed His disciples to fast for many reasons.  He set the example by fasting himself for 40 days at the beginning of His ministry.
Many Christians fast the first 21 days of the year.  Following is an outline from a message on prayer and fasting:

PRAYER and FASTING IN JANUARY – FIRST FRUITS OF THE YEAR

There are 74 REFERENCES IN BIBLE TO FASTING

1.       1.  Nehemiah was ‘FASTING AND PRAYING” before he went to King Artaxerxes to let his people go.  (Neh. 1:4)

2.       2.  Daniel served God with “PRAYER AND SUPPLICATIONS WITH FASTING”  (Daniel 9:3)

3.       3.  Jesus defeated satan with FASTING AND THE WORD

4.  Paul served God with FASTING AND PRAYER.”  ((II Cor. 11:27)

  (Joel 2:12-17 NIV)  “Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a HOLY FAST, call a sacred assembly.  Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the ELDERS, GATHER THE CHILDREN, THOSE NURSING AT THE BREAST, Let The bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber.  “Let the PRIESTS, WHO MINISTER BEFORE THE lord, weep between the temple, porch and the altar, Let them say, ‘Spare your people O Lord’.”

  (Matt. 9:14-16 NIV) “then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?  Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them?  The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them:  then they will fast.”

  WHY PRAY AND FAST NOW

  1. Fasting breaks the FLESH and heightens spiritual awareness.  The flesh is where most of our trouble comes from.  It wants what it wants to satisfy the five senses.  Fasting slays the flesh; so the spirit man can take the dominion it is supposed to.  SPIRITUAL AWARENESS becomes keen.  Demonic influences are recognized.  The VOICE OF GOD is easier to hear.  Some people have VISIONS such as when Daniel was fasting and praying and God showed him things to come.  Cornelius fasted four days and an ANGEL appeared to him.  (Acts 10:30)
  1. Fasting is associated with HUMBLING ONESELF.  Humbling oneself means to REPENT OF SIN and WRONG DOING.  The Jews fasted on the Day of Atonement and many other times.  Chron. 7:14)
  1. Fasting breaks demonic powers!  The disciples were perplexed when they could not drive a demon out of a boy.  Jesus cast out the demon instantly and said  (Matthew 17:21) “This kind does not go out except by prayer and FASTING.”  Remember, satan tempted Jesus three times at the end of a 40-day fast and Jesus defeated him every time with the Word of God!
  2. Fasting destroys the plans of the enemy!  Esther called a national corporate fast of three days with no food or water.  The enemy was soundly defeated and the people received great favor and blessing.

NOTE: CHRISTIANS MUST WAKE UP!  SATANISTS FAST REGULARLY
 THAT PASTORS AND CHURCHES WILL BE DESTROYED.

(II Chron 20) When the Ammonites and Moabites were coming against Judah to destroy it, King Jehoshaphat cried out to God and called for a corporate fast. A prophet proclaimed, “The Battle is the Lords!”  When they were spiritually prepared, he sent the praisers WAR WORSHIP out before his army.  The enemy turned on one another and killed each other.  Not one Israelite was killed.  And they took a great plunder from the enemy! 
 FASTING AND WORSHIP ARE A MIGHTY SWORD.  WAR WORSHIP STRIPS THE ENEMY OF POWER!

5.       Fasting can make you ten times smarter! – Daniel Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah were teenagers who were taken captive from Jerusalem to Babylon.  Because of their nobility, they were selected for the king's service and commanded to eat his food.  They refused and ate only fruit and vegetables for ten days.  When tested they were ten times smarter than before! (Daniel 1 & 5:14)  “I have even heard of thee, that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and excellent wisdom is found in thee”.

6.       FASTING WILL GUIDE YOU TO THE RIGHT MATE  (Gen 24)  Abraham’s servant would not eat or drink until the matter of a mate for Isaac was settled.

7.       Fasting births ministry (Acts 14:23)

8.       Fasting is good for the body.  Fasting is HEALING! (Isaiah 58)  Often times it is not what we do not eat that can kill us but WHAT WE DO EAT!  The 21 – day Eden diet (Daniel-Vegetarian)  will ALKALINE YOUR BODY and flush out toxic buildup.  A seven-day fast will give the organs time to rest and “dump” built up toxins.  DRINK MUCH DISTILLED OR PURE WATER AND GATOR AID IF YOU ARE OVER 50 FOR ELECTROLYTES.

  WHEN NOT TO FAST

  Spiritual Pride – So others will be impressed with your spirituality.  Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for this (Matt 6:16)

2.       If you are in Sin – It is commendable if you are fasting and praying while repenting and asking God to give you strength to overcome a sin problem; but if you fast and are covering a secret   sin, you may open up the door to a power that YOU DO NOT WANT!  Remember the Sons of Sceva! (Acts 19)

3.       Do not fast just to lose weight – If that is your motive, then see a physician to do it properly.  FAST to humble yourself before God and for spiritual benefit.  Losing weight is a byproduct.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF FASTS

Start with short fasts and build up to longer fasts

For fasts longer than a few days, consult your physician if you have any medical problems

Go off of a fast of more than a few days VERY SLOWLY or you may harm your body. .....COMMON SENSE!!

§                 Absolute Fast – No food or water
        Total Fast – No food and water only
           Eden Fast (Daniel Fast)  – Fresh fruits and vegetables only.  No bread, sugar or salt!
         Partial Fast – Certain foods eliminated…One meal a day…One day a week…fasting certain foods/1 day fast…3 day fast…7 day fast…10 day fast…21 day fast…40 day fast

  BE LED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT IN FASTING ......GOD WILL HONOR ALL FASTS WHEN DONE WITH THE RIGHT SPIRIT!

§         WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU PRAYED AN HOUR A DAY?

§         WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU AND YOUR FAMILY PRAYED TOGETHER EVERY DAY?

§         WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU MADE THIS PRAYERCOMMITMENT FOR A YEAR?

§         WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF OUR CHURCH PRAYED AROUND THE CLOCK NOT ONLY FOR A MONTH BUT FOR A YEAR?

§         WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF YOU PRAYED AND FASTED REGULARLY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

§         WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE CHURCH PRAYED AND FASTED REGULARLY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

§         WHAT WOULD HAPPEN????????????????????????????????

WHEAT OR WEEDS?
