“As he rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, SO IS MY WORD THAT GOES OUT FROM MY MOUTH.”  It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”  (Isaiah 55:10-11)

INTRODUCTION

The Bible is God’s written revelation of His will to men.

The central theme is salvation through Jesus Christ

“…listen closely to my words.  Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body.”  (Proverbs 4:20-22 NIV)

q       George Washington: “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible

q       John Quincy Adams:  “So great is my veneration of the Bible, that the earlier my children begin to read it the more confident will be my hope that they will prove useful citizens of their country and respectable members of society.”

q       Charles Dickens:  The New Testament is the very best book that ever was or ever will be known in the world.”

q       Andrew Jackson:  “That book, sir, is the rock on which our republic rests.”

q       Abraham Lincoln:  “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man.  All the good from the Saviour of the world is communicated to us through this book.”

q       Douglas MacArthur:  “Believe me sir, never a night goes by, be I ever so tired, but I read the Word of God before I go to bed.”

There is a unity of thought which indicates that One Mind inspired the writing of the whole series of 66 books; that it bears on its face the stamp of its Author; that it is in every sense the  “WORD OF GOD”

                              SPEAKING THE WORD

Brings salvation  (Romans 10:9-10)  …”if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be savaed.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confessions is made unto salvation.”

Creates  (Genesis 1-2) “God said…”

Destroys ( Proverbs 18:2) “Life and death are in the Power of the Tongue..”

Overcomes satan (Rev. 12:11) And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony and they did not love their lives to the death.”

(Col. 3:16)  “Let the Word of Christ dwell in you…”

GOD ALWAYS HONORS HIS WORD

(Isaiah 55:1l) “So shall My Word that goes forth from My Mouth; it shall not return to me void. But it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

  ONE SOLITARY LIFE

Here is a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman.  He grew up in another obscure village.  He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty, and then for three years He was an itinerant preacher.  He never wrote a blood.  He never held an office.  He never owned a home. He never had a family.  He never went to college.  He never put His foot inside a big city.  He never traveled two hundred miles from the place where He was born.  He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself.

While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against Him.  His friends ran away.  One of them denied Him.  He was turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial.  He was nailed to a cross between two thieves.  His executioners gambled for the only piece of property He had on earth while He was dying – and that was His coat.  When

Twenty wide centuries have come and gone, and today He is the centerpiece of the human race and the leader of the column of progress.

It is far within the mark to say that all the armies that ever marched, and all the navies that ever were built, and all the parliaments that ever sat, and all the kings that ever reigned, put together have not affected the life of man upon this earth as powerfully as has that ONE SOLITARY LIFE.

GUIDE FOR STUDYING THE WORD OF GOD

(II Tim. 2:15 AMP)  “Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing – rightly handling and skillfully teaching – the Word of Truth.”

(I Cor. 9:27) “…I discipline my body and bring it into subjection…”

(Col. 3:23)  “…and whatever you do , do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward….”

                      STUDYING THE BIBLE EFFECTIVELY

FOUR THINGS YOU SHOULD INCLUDE IN A JOURNAL

Invite the Holy Spirit to come and be your teacher

Read the Bible every day

Make use of a Through the Bible in a Year Guide

1.      God’s message to You  - Ask Him for a special word or encouragement from the Word just for you

2.      A promise from God – As you read, look for promises that speak specifically to you and your needs.  Write down the promise that speaks to you the most.  There are four things to consider when claiming promises:

1)      Make sure they are universal promises

2)      Make sure they apply to you.  (Some are for Israel; some are for the people in the Millennium; and some are promised judgments on the wicked.)

3)      Keep them in context.

4)      See if there are any “conditions.”

3.      A command to keep – select the most important command you read and write it down, such as  (Psalm 141:3) “Set a watch before my mouth and keep the door of my lips.”

4.      Application - Write down how you can apply one or more of your “finds” to your daily life.

that I might not sin against you.”  (Psalm 119:11 NIV)

“Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.”   (Romans 10:17 KJ)

“The Word of the Lord endureth forever.”  (I Peter 1:25

It takes 70 hours and 40 minutes to read the Bible out loud.

It takes 52 hours and 20 minutes to read the Old Testament.

It takes 18 hours and 20 minutes to read the New Testament.

                                  MEMORIZATION AND MEDITATION

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path o sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.  He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings for its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”  (Psalm 1:1-3)

“…be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love in spirit, in faith, in purity…give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine…do not neglect the gift that is in you…meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress may be evident to all.”  (I Tim. 4:12-15)

       E.  The Mind of Christ

(I Cor. 2:16) “…who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ.”

All Scripture is given by inspiration from God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”  (II Tim. 3:16-17)

“Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come—and the books, especially he parchments.”(II Tim. 4:13)

E.    Ask the Lord to help you in every area and "He will make His strength perfect in your weakness."
